Improved Access to Healthcare: Free medical treatments and nutritional programs have enhanced community health, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and toddlers.
Sercova: Integrating Climate, Community, and Biodiversity for Sustainability in East Seram
Obstacle
Sercova (Seram Climate and Conservation Project) is a flagship initiative in East Seram that integrates climate change, community empowerment, and biodiversity conservation. Implemented by Gaia, this program focuses on key sectors at the community level, including health through free medical treatment for the elderly and supplementary feeding for toddlers, education through scholarships for local students, as well as the development of agriculture and fisheries based on Climate Smart Practices. While delivering significant positive impacts, Sercova faces various challenges, such as limited supporting infrastructure in remote areas and a lack of skilled human resources for implementing climate-smart practices. Nevertheless, Gaia remains committed to promoting sustainability and prosperity for the people and environment of East Seram.
Solution
To address healthcare challenges, Gaia collaborates with local health centers (puskesmas) and the Department of Health to provide free medical treatment for the elderly and supplementary feeding programs for toddlers. These initiatives are designed to combat malnutrition and improve overall community health, particularly in areas where access to healthcare services is limited. By working hand-in-hand with local authorities, the program ensures that health interventions are sustainable and reach those most in need.
In response to the lack of skilled human resources, Gaia provides capacity-building programs tailored to the needs of the community. This includes training sessions on climate-smart agricultural techniques, sustainable fishing practices, and technology adoption for young farmers and fishers. Additionally, Gaia offers mentorship programs in collaboration with local universities to equip students with practical skills they can apply in their communities.
Gaia also addresses educational gaps by expanding scholarship opportunities and launching community-based educational programs. These initiatives include workshops on environmental awareness and skill development for youth, empowering them to contribute actively to the program’s goals. Moreover, Gaia works with local schools to integrate environmental and climate education into the curriculum, fostering a new generation of environmentally conscious leaders.
Lastly, to ensure long-term program sustainability, Gaia works in collaboration with PT Strata Pacific. This partnership focuses on securing resources and implementing Climate Smart Practices across farming and fishing sectors. By promoting sustainable methods that enhance productivity while reducing environmental impact, Sercova continues to build resilience and foster growth in East Seram, creating a harmonious balance between community well-being and environmental conservation.
