Free, Prior and Informed Consent
Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) is a principle that grants indigenous peoples and local communities the right to approve or reject projects affecting their lands, territories, or resources through a process free from coercion, conducted beforehand, and with complete information. FPIC is recognized by international bodies such as the United Nations (UN) through the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) via ILO Convention No. 169, both of which emphasize the protection of indigenous rights.
